The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a strong and unequivocal rejection of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent remarks made during the Independence Day celebrations, in which he controversially linked the group to acts of terrorism. In response, IPOB has firmly declared that its struggle is fundamentally rooted in peaceful advocacy and the lawful pursuit of self-determination for the Biafran people.
In a detailed statement, IPOB’s spokesperson, Comrade Emma Powerful, emphasized that the movement is committed to operating through nonviolent means. He pointed out a significant ruling from 2017 by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which confirmed that IPOB is not classified as a terrorist organization. This ruling serves as a crucial legal foundation for the group’s ongoing efforts to advocate for their rights and aspirations.
Furthermore, IPOB has called upon the federal government to respect and honor due legal processes concerning the ongoing detention of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. The group reaffirmed its unwavering resolve to seek justice through legitimate and lawful channels, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the rule of law in all matters.
As Nigeria commemorated its 65th Independence anniversary, IPOB took the opportunity to urge citizens across the nation to prioritize constructive dialogue, unity, and a steadfast commitment to the rule of law. They cautioned against the dangers of political scapegoating and divisive rhetoric, advocating instead for a collective approach that fosters understanding and cooperation among all Nigerians, regardless of their backgrounds or beliefs. This call for unity reflects IPOB’s broader vision for a peaceful and just society.
